After-School Child Care Scheme
This is a scheme to support low income families with the cost of childcare
What is the After-School Child Care Scheme?
The After-School Child Care Scheme is a support available for low-income people to return to work. The scheme provides subsidised childcare places to people with children of primary school age who start working more hours or enter into employment.
The after-school places are provided by both community and commercial childcare providers in the local community and you pay your contribution directly to them.
Who is eligible for this scheme?
You may be eligible for this scheme if:
- You have one or more child between 4 and 13 years of age, who are in primary school
- You are in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance, Jobseeker’s Benefit, Jobseeker’s Transitional Payment, One-Parent Family Payment or you are on an employment support programme for at least 3 months.
- You have been getting Family Income Supplement and increase your hours of work.
To avail of this scheme you must either:
- Start a new job
- Increase the number of hours you currently work
- Take a place on an employment support programme
Who is not eligible for this scheme?
People who are on a Community Employment scheme are not eligible for this as the Community Employment Childcare Programme provides childcare for participants. If you are self-employed and claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance you cannot avail of this scheme.
What childcare am I entitled to under the scheme?
You are entitled to a total of 52 weeks of after-school childcare under this scheme. However, if you only use the service part time in a week, that is counted as a full week. These 52 weeks start from the date you first take up a place on the scheme. You will be told when you are coming to the end of your 52 weeks.
If you lose you job you can no longer avail of the scheme, but if you get your job back or get a new job you will be entitled to any of your remaining 52 week provision.
How much does it cost?
If you are offered a place on the scheme, your after school child care will cost €3 per day per child. There is also a pick-up service available free of charge.
Does the cost increase during school holidays?
No. If you need full-time childcare during the school holidays, you are eligible for up to 10 weeks of full-time care under the scheme. But you can not only use the scheme during the holidays, you must use it during the school year to be eligible for school holiday child care.
How do I apply?
Contact your local Intreo or Social Welfare office for information. A member of staff will explain the application process and give you the forms you need. If you qualify for the scheme you will be given a letter of confirmation, and you will be referred to your local County Childcare Committee who will arrange your afterschool childcare place(s).
