If you (like more than one billion people worldwide) use social media regularly, chances are you’ve seen a tweet, a text, or status where someone is looking for help in the wrong place. You’ve probably seen tweets or statuses or photos captioned ‘like this to stop bullying’ ‘to stop suicide’ etc. Even though these are usually well intentioned, they lack the most important thing - where’s the support?

The SpunOut.ie 'Links for life' share support idea came out of a Twitter conversation last October between fellow SpunOutter Owen Brennan and myself after the tragic suicide of Amanda Todd. There were a lot of people retweeting and liking photos to ‘stop bullying’, but zero support lines found themselves in our newsfeeds. We wrote an article with our points for SpunOut.ie and two weeks later, that article found itself on page five of the Irish Examiner, turns out, we weren’t the only ones thinking the same.

The idea was brought to the SpunOut.ie action panel where we discussed designs, and what numbers should be on the photo. After this, it was sent to a graphic designer who made the picture.

The 'Links for Life' photo is made for sharing. By posting it on your Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter – or whatever social media sites you like to use; you’re helping people who could be in a crisis with nowhere to turn. Even if you’re not into social media you can stick it in an email or on your phone - whatever you’d like to do with it. Just get it out there!

No one wants their friend to suffer or to get to the stage where they are making crisis posts. Sometime you may find yourself in the situation where someone has turned to you for help, or where you might need it yourself. If you don’t know what to do, this could be a great thing to send around. The 'Links for life' image is easy to share and pointing someone in the right direction towards getting help is a great thing to do.
