Have Fun, Get Fit!

Enjoyable ways to get active

#HaveFunGetFit, Ireland’s youth information website, is today launching the brand new ‘Have Fun, Get Fit!’ campaign.

Getting fit doesn't need to be expensive or time-consuming and it can improve mental health as well as physical health. We want to encourage people to try new and different physical activities that can be a load of fun. Ever thought about giving rock climbing a go? Or how about hula hooping or even roller derby?  One of the biggest barriers to working out is the lack of motivation. Have Fun, Get Fit! will focus on enjoyable, challenging and diverse ways to get moving.

It’s well known that regular physical activity is good for you. It improves physical health, as well as mental and emotional health. According to the results of the 2015 Healthy Ireland Survey only 45% of 15-24-year-olds are getting regular high intensity physical exercise, with young men (56%) being more likely to be physically active than young women (34%).

A study that appeared in Journal Of American College Health found that if people enjoy the exercise they are doing and they feel challenged they are more likely to stick to it and reap the rewards of regular exercise.

Commenting on ‘Have Fun, Get Fit!’,’s Executive Director Ian Power said “This campaign is all about finding new and enjoyable ways to motivate yourself, whether that be joining a team or a class, having fun and getting fit will improve physical & mental health”

As part of this campaign, we have put together a series of videos, where meets people who have a lot of fun while they are getting fit. The series explores some activities that are off the beaten track & a little different from slogging away in the gym.

In our Have Fun Get Fit video series we meet Lucy, trainer and owner of Boogie Bounce Xtreme. Gavin in the University of Limerick introduces us to Kayaking. Trinity Trampoline Club show us some serious moves, we go rock climbing with DCU  and we spend some time with Dylan and The Ultimate Frisbee Club in Maynooth.  

If you are looking for some inspiration for alternatives to the gym, we have fact sheets on; Badminton, Climbing, Cycling, FutSal, Handball, Hiking, Hip Hop Dancing, Horse Riding, Hula Hooping, Kayaking, Martial Arts, Orienteering, Pole Fitness, Roller Derby, Squash, Swimming, Trampolining, Ultimate Frisbee & Weight Lifting. Check them out on will be holding open events with some of those featured in the video series so if you fancy giving Boogie Bounce a go, or trying your hand at Ultimate Frisbee this could be your chance.
