The Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty, has encouraged those receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance or Jobseeker’s Benefit to seek out temporary seasonal work for the Christmas period.

How long can I work?

Anyone receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance or Benefit can take on temporary seasonal work for up to 12 weeks between now and the Christmas / New Year period without losing their entitlement to their social welfare claim.

What do I have to do?

In order to make sure you hold onto your claim, you must inform your local social welfare office before you start your temporary job. When your temporary work comes to an end after Christmas, your social welfare payments will continue without any delay.

This means you can take up temporary work over Christmas without having to go through the process of re-applying for Jobseeker’s Allowance or Benefit when it comes to an end.

The Minister is urging businesses to consider hiring people on the Live Register for temporary work and to contact the Intreo office in their area where officers will find suitable people to fill the positions.
