If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal, there are a number of services around the country that can offer support. Many of these services offer free in-person counselling sessions, providing a safe space for you to talk about how you’re feeling and find ways to cope with suicidal thoughts. A number of these services also offer support to those who have lost someone to suicide.

If you are in distress and need help now, you can call the Pieta 24 hour helpline at 1800 247 247 or call Samaritans at 116 123.

If you are in crisis and you find yourself in an emergency situation, visit your closest A&E and tell them you need help.

I can’t find a service in my area

If you are having trouble finding a service close to you, visit your GP as soon as possible and ask to be referred to a mental health service in your area. They should be able to tell you where the closest service is and can make arrangements for you to be seen.

You can also reach out to friends, family, a guidance counsellor, or someone you trust and let them know what’s going on.

Suicide support services in Carlow

There are currently no suicide support organisations in Carlow, but that does not mean there is no support and mental health care near you. Visit your GP and ask to be referred to a local service, or reach out to a guidance counsellor, family, friends, or someone else you trust.

You could also consider attending a service in LaoisKildareWicklowWexford or Kilkenny if you are able to travel to a nearby county.

SOSAD Ireland

SOSAD Ireland offer free counselling and in-person support at their centres, including providing a safe and comfortable space where you can talk about how you are feeling, a meeting to establish what your needs are, and professional counselling, bereavement support, and follow-up support.

The SOSAD office in Cavan has a drop-in centre from 10am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and you can also call or email the office to arrange to come in and see someone.

Traveller Counselling Service

The Traveller Counselling Service offer free counselling services to Travellers in a comfortable setting. As well as supporting those with suicidal thoughts, they can help with feelings of depression, anxiety, relationship or family problems, drugs and alcohol abuse, LGBTI+ issues, and physical or sexual abuse.

The Community Crisis Response Team will travel to people who are in suicidal distress. If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal, you can call the crisis response team and they will send someone out to you, at any location.
