The Immigration Council of Ireland today launched their booklet "Immigration Status in Ireland: What do I need to know". The booklet is a new information resource to help young people from a migrant background navigate the immigration system in Ireland. The booklet was launched by Minister of State for Equality, Immigration and Integration, David Stanton at Filmbase in Temple Bar, Dublin.

CEO of the Immigrant Council of Ireland, Brian Kiloran spoke at the event, highlighting the need for this resource which can support young migrants to secure their immigration status; "We have developed this resource because of the very real need for young people – and those supporting them – to have a clear, user-friendly guide to the immigration system."

Rutendo Kandiwa, an engineering student in Trinity College Dublin and migrant from South Africa spoke of her experience of realising her immigration permission had expired two years previously at the age of 16, when she had gone to renew her status at 18. Speaking about the process she went through, she highlighted the need for clarity and guidance for young migrants when applying through INIS (The Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service) to secure their immigration status.

Students from migrant backgrounds from St Joseph’s Secondary School, Stanhope Street were also at the launch. These students had worked with the Immigrant Council of Ireland in creating the booklet. Their work helped to ensure the information was accessible and relevant to young migrants seeking the information.
