How can we make fashion more sustainable?
Our sustainable fashion project explores the impact that the fast fashion industry has on the environment
In Ireland, around 63,000 tonnes of clothing and other textiles are thrown away by households each year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Clothing accounts for 60% of all textiles used and produced in the last 15 years. While the production of clothing has doubled in this time, the number of times an item is worn has declined by almost 40%, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
Our sustainable fashion project aims to shed light on the reality of textile waste in the fashion industry, looking at fast fashion and its impact on workers and the environment, how we can reduce waste and protect the planet from the damage the fashion industry causes, and how we can move towards a more sustainable fashion system.
Sustainable fashion does not feel accessible to everyone – but there is more than one way to do it, and it doesn’t need to mean spending a lot of money. In fact, there are some things you can do to create a more sustainable wardrobe that can even save you money.
