What is spunout’s Youth Jury?

spunout’s youth jury asks one big question: how can the digital world best support young people to thrive? You will explore three themes and tell us what they think the future of the digital world should look like:

  1. Connection & Belonging
  2. The Weight of Being Online
  3. Truth, Trust and Information

Who can apply?

To apply to sit on the Youth Jury, you need to be:

  • aged between 16 and 25
  • living in the Republic of Ireland
  • be available for ALL the selected dates

If you are under 18, we will need consent from your parent or guardian before you can take part.

We want each jury to reflect young people from all walks of life. We will select jurors using set criteria to get as representative a mix as possible across gender, educational background, disability, ethnicity and geographic location.  That is why the application forms ask some questions about you.

What is involved?

Each theme will have its own jury of 10 young people. If you are selected you will take part in:

  • Online preparation session: An introductory session online in early January to learn how the jury  and to meet your fellow jurors.
  • Two in-person days in Dublin: Saturday January 23rd and Saturday February 13th. On these days you will hear from expert witnesses, such as academics, change-makers and people with professional experience of your theme and  take part in facilitated dialogue to shape your jury’s findings.
  • One follow up session: Jurors will have the option to attend an online session afterwards to confirm your jury’s finding.

Your travel expenses and food on the in person days will be covered. If you need any specific support to take part, please just let us know.

Why is this important?

Too often, big policy decisions are made for young people, but not with young people. The Youth Jury puts young people in the decision makers seat, looking at evidence, weighting it up and deciding what should change. This presents a unique opportunity to inform national debate and make sure that young people’s voices are not only heard, but taken seriously.

What will happen after the jury process?

spunout will use the jury’s recommendations in our advocacy work of spunout. This will empower us to advocate to decision makers such as politicians, on the issues that jurors have raised and the solutions they would like to see. We will let jurors know what happens with their recommendations and there may be opportunities to get involved in the advocacy work that follows.
