Some people consume the stuff religiously; it is a stimulant after all and can give you that mental alertness first thing in the morning. On the other hand, if you do over-indulge it can have some not-so nice side effects.

Found in food and beverages like coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate and energy drinks, sometimes you can be consuming coffee without even realising.

Side-effects of caffeine:

There are a number of side effects to consuming caffeine. Some of these can be more serious than others, especially if you consume excessive amounts of caffeine.

General side effects:

  • Unable to sleep or suffering from insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Nausea

More serious side effects

Excessive consumption of caffeine can lead to some more serious side effects, and if you’re experiencing these it might be a good idea to visit your GP.

  • Diarrhoea/constipation
  • Stomach pains/bloating
  • Blood in your poo
  • Green vomit
  • Twitching/uncontrollable muscle movements
  • Fever
  • High blood pressure/high blood sugar

Recommended daily dose of caffeine:

The recommended daily limit for caffeine intake is 400mg or 200mg if you’re pregnant.

Coffee has some addictive qualities and the withdrawal symptoms to come with them if you decide to cut down.
