The #EUandMe Young Filmmaker Competition is now open. The competition aims to highlight the benefits that young people have as EU citizens. Entrants in the competition are asked to write and direct a short film on the opportunities that living in the European Union provides. The five winners will receive a grant of €7,500 euro to create their film.

Themes of the competition

The film submissions must be connected to one of the five themes of the #EUandME campaign:

  • Digital
  • Mobility
  • Skills & Business
  • Sustainability
  • Rights

These themes can be portrayed in any way you want, such as highlighting the freedom being a citizen of the EU gives you to travel or the education opportunities available to European young people through the Erasmus programme.

Entering the #EUandMe Filmmaker Competition

Who can enter the competition?

The competition is open to European filmmakers residing in the EU aged between 18 and 35. You can only participate as an individual; group entries will not be considered.

How do I enter the competition?

To enter the competition, you’ll need things:

  • 500 word summary of your proposed film
  • 60 second video, filmed with your smartphone, explaining the rationale behind your film
  • A link to a short film that you have previously made within the last 5 years

If your first language is not English you will have to submit both your summary and  your 60 second videos in English and your native language.

The deadline for submissions is 31 October 2018 at 11:00 GMT (In Ireland).

How will the winners be chosen?

A panel of five European film directors will review the entries and choose 10 nominees, two from each of the five categories. Starting from January 2019 the winners will be selected by a public online vote which will take place over the space of five weeks. The result will be announced on the competition's webpage and on the European Commission's social media accounts. Each week will be dedicated to a category: two category nominees will be picked and the public will be asked to vote for their favourite film idea.

Needs some inspiration?

You can watch five films directed by professional filmmakers on the same topics here. Winners will also receive the opportunity to be mentored by one of these five award-winning directors.
