There are a number of subsidised training opportunities available for people interested in gaining a TEFL qualification with the TEFL Scholarship.

The TEFL Scholarship could bring you to 11 different cities around Europe in countries like the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland, and Romania.

What is TEFL?

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. The TEFL Programme gives you the skills to teach English to others who don’t speak English as their first language. This can give you the opportunity to travel to different countries all over the world and get paid to teach English.

What is the TEFL Scholarship?

The TEFL Scholarship is a unique training opportunity that will allow you to do your TEFL training and gain experience while travelling around Europe. There is up to 97% fee sponsorship, meaning all you have to pay for the 3 week programme is €19, plus your flights.

What is included in the TEFL Scholarship?

As part of the programme, the TEFL Institute will arrange:

  • Welcome orientation
  • Hotel accommodation (3 / 4 star)
  • 3 meals per day
  • City centre pickup & transfers
  • A lifelong accredited TEFL qualification
  • Ongoing in-country support
  • Live teaching practice with real students

When your 3 weeks are complete, you will have the opportunity to apply for paid internships or teaching jobs through TEFL.

How does training and teaching work?

When you sign up you will be given access to the 120 hours of online TEFL training. You will have up to 6 months to complete this course, and you can do it any time within those 6 months.

When you go abroad, you’ll get the chance to put that training into practice. Each week you will gain up to 70 hours of teaching practice as part of the scholarship.

Part of this teaching includes conversational English over breakfast, lunch and dinner with students, as well as cycling, kayaking, tennis or hiking with participants, which can be included in teaching hours.

At the end of your 3 weeks, you will receive a scholarship completion certificate for a total of 320 hours of training and teaching.

Where and when can I go?

You get to choose which city you go to and how long you stay there for. For example, you might decide you want to do one week in Krakow, one week in Budapest, and one week Prague. You can choose any combination of the cities available.

This is a year-round programme with start seasons in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

What are the requirements?

To take part in the TEFL Scholarship, you must be:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • A native English speaker
  • Have completed your leaving cert (or other secondary qualification)
  • Provide a police background check
  • Have travel insurance
  • Be able to cover day-to-day costs outside of what is provided as part of the programme
