If you have a visual impairment, the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) offer this free course to help maximise your quality of life.

Who is eligible?

You must be between 18 and 65 to participate in this course and have significant degree of sight loss. This includes people who have had a visual impairment since birth, or those whose vision impairment occurred later in life.

What does it involve?

Some elements of the course include:

  • Technology
  • Daily living skills
  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Braille
  • Handwriting
  • Kitchen skills
  • Mobility and daily living skills
  • Self-development
  • Mobility training

It aims to help you access the skills, knowledge and attitude required to access further education, training and/or employment.

How long does it last?

The programme usually lasts around 12 months, but can be flexible.

How much does it cost?

It is free of charge.

Employment support

There is an Employment Officer on-site at the NCBI, who can help you with job seeking issues, including career guidance, preparation of CVs, help finding work placements, and advice.
