How to spend your summer if you can't find a summer job
Alternative ways to spend your summer if you don't have a job
During the summer months, it can sometimes be difficult to find part-time work as there is an increase in people looking for work who are on break from school or college. Although it can be disappointing not to be able to find a job during the summer there are plenty of other productive things to do with your time. Below you can find a list of alternative things you can do this summer.
Find an internship
Internships can be a great way to gain experience and to see if what you are thinking about doing for a job in the future is actually what you want to do. You will not only learn valuable skills from partaking in one, but it will also look great on your resume as well. Internships can also be difficult to find once summer begins so where possible apply for internships at the same time as you look for summer work.
Take summer classes
Taking a summer class is a great way to occupied and learn something you may not get time to study if you are in school or college. Classes are available on a range of topics from photography to gardening, or yoga and dance. Take some time to look at what is available in your local community and if any classes offer student discounts or discounts for the unemployed.
Become health conscious
Summer break is a great time to focus on your personal health. With the weather getting better you can take full advantage of spending time in the outdoors swimming, hiking or cycling. Enjoy time with your friends outside by going to the beach or parks. Summer can also be a great opportunity to spend time cooking and baking. With extra time on your hands you can practice new recipes using seasonal fruits and vegetables that are available during the summer months.
Volunteering is a great way to help out your community and still gain experience. Not only will volunteering allow you to contribute to your community and help others, but it will also help add to your CV. Check online or in your local community centre for volunteer opportunities that may suit you.
If you have spare this time you can also use it to invest in your relationships with others. It can be easy during the school/college year to get caught up in your own life and work, especially if you live out of home. The summer can be a great opportunity to spend quality time with your friends and family that you may not get to see that often throughout the school year.
This might not be an option for everyone, but if you're in a position to do so, travelling can be an enjoyable use of time during the summer. If you don't have a lot of spare money you don't have to go abroad but can spend your time travelling locally or around Ireland. Traveling is a great way to meet new people and to try different things and can help you feel you are making the most of your summer.
