We are excited to introduce ‘LGBTQIA+ _______: Intersections of Identity,’ a heartfelt new project by renowned photographer Niamh Barry. This visual and auditory exploration dives deep into the lives of three young LGBTQIA+ individuals, each carrying unique, intersectional identities.

Intersectional identities mean recognising how different parts of a person’s identity, like gender, sexuality, and culture, combine to shape their unique experiences.

Through a series of stunning portraits and intimate audio interviews, we showcase the complexity and beauty of holding multiple identities, often seen as conflicting or diverse.

Discover ‘LGBTQIA+ _______: Intersections of Identity’

‘Intersections of Identity’ captures the experiences of Bel, Hunter, and Shane—three young adults navigating their unique journeys. By sharing their stories, we want to present an uplifting and authentic narrative that highlights the diversity of human experience.

Why this project matters

Our goal is to celebrate the rich diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community by focusing on intersectionality. Through Niamh Barry’s cohesive series of portraits and our insightful audio interviews, we hope to promote a broader understanding of identity.

Meet Our Inspiring Subjects

Bel (she/they)

Bel grew up in a deeply religious household where identifying as non-binary and pansexual was considered a sin. Despite these challenges, Bel navigates their identity with resilience, emphasising the importance of supportive environments.

Hunter (he/they)

Hunter discovered their gender fluidity through everyday experiences and overcame fears rooted in religious constraints. Family support has been pivotal in their journey, boosting their confidence and advocating for LGBTQIA+ awareness.

Shane (he/him)

An Irish Traveller, Shane came out as gay in January. Despite facing online hate, living openly has brought Shane immense joy and strength. His mother and TikTok followers’ support has been crucial in his journey as a proud gay Irish Traveller.
