Name: Sarah Dunne
Preferred pronouns: Her/She
Local Electoral Area: Carrick-on-Suir
Is this your first time running? Yes, however I was co-opted onto my Town Council in 2011 but never actually stood for election
What are your reasons for running as a young person in politics?
I am running for my local council because I believe young people, especially women, are greatly underrepresented in Tipperary. When I was on the Town Council I saw how important it was to have local representation for everything from maintaining roads with potholes being fixed and speed bumps being installed to ensuring people living in social housing have accommodation that suits their needs. Since the abolition of the Town Council I have seen how local voices have been lost and I am committed to working with Fórsa and Siptu to restore Town Councils to urban areas with a population of over 5,000 through their “More Power to You” campaign.
In 2016 I was diagnosed with MS and I have now seen first hand the lack of health services available in Tipperary. Fifteen percent of the population of Tipperary are living with disabilities and it is up to the Local Authority to put in place supports for people with disabilities including housing and access to medical services. We need more suitable retirement housing for our older population. We need to open another retirement village for people who do not need larger houses but are well enough to live in an independent residential facility as opposed to a nursing home, and so freeing larger houses for new families and such.
