Do you feel unsafe at home while social distancing?

Having to stay at home is not easy for everyone. There are organisations out there who can support you.

Being told to stay at home for the next number of weeks can bring feelings of anxiety or panic for some people. If home isn’t a safe environment for you, it can be hard to feel comfortable there. These feelings can come on top of any worry you might already be feeling about the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, making this a very difficult time. 

In order to prevent the spread of the virus any further, it’s important that we practice social distancing. This means staying at least 2 metres away from other people, and staying at home as much as possible.

Things you can do while social distancing

If you are finding it hard at home, here are some things you can try:

Find ways to manage anxiety

This is an anxious time for a lot of people, and knowing how you can manage some of that anxiety can be a great help. If you’re worried about COVID-19 (Coronavirus), there are things you can do to manage coronavirus anxiety.

It can help to take time to do some self care, get some exercise (if you go outside, make sure to keep your social distance), create some routines, and try your best to get a good night’s sleep. These things can all help with worry and stress.

Stay connected

Just because you can’t hang out with friends in person, this doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected with others. Talk to people on WhatsApp or social media, schedule video calls, if you can, play games with each other online or simply have a phone call. Making sure to do something each day to connect with a friend will help you to feel better. There are lots of ways you can stay connected with friends while social distancing.

There are organisations out there that can help. Here are places you can contact if you are feeling unsafe or having a hard time at home:

Women’s Aid

Women’s Aid offers advice and practical support for women and children who are being physically, emotionally and sexually abused in their own homes.

You can call their national helpline for free on 1800 341 900

Men’s Aid

Men’s Aid supports men and their families experiencing domestic abuse. Their helpline is available to offer advice and support at 01-5543811

Dublin Rape Crisis Centre

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre offer a free, national 24-hour helpline on 1800 77 88 88 for anyone who has experienced sexual assault, rape or childhood sexual abuse. The line remains open at all times during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

Samaritans

You can call the Samaritans at any time to talk to a volunteer about anything that’s on your mind. The can be reached for free at 116 123
